Morocco In Black & White
It was a beautiful morning in June 2024, and we were returning to our happy place in North Africa just in time to hear the second call to prayer. We had two missions on this trip. The first was celebrating my birthday alongside creating a capsule home accessories collection we’d envisioned, all in Black & White. The stark contrast of these two colors was ever so clear, particularly as Morocco is known for its rich, vibrant colors and artisan culture.
If you’ve had the opportunity to visit Marrakech, you know that every glance gives you a different texture, color, and shade. Your eyes dance from the most explosive mix of mosaic tiles to the various hues of terracotta in the architecture. The smell and rich colors of spices make you crave tagine with couscous, and let’s not forget the women strolling in their kaftans and the men in their jellabas. One could go color blind!
Diamonds In The Rough
Whenever we meet someone who asks about our love of Morocco, they often first mention the souks, and rightly so. There’s so much to see within those marketplace tents that a week’s visit still won’t be enough to fully uncover and discover those “diamonds in the rough.” But our mission goes deeper than the walls of the souk.
For us, those ‘diamonds’ are the people and our intimate connections with them. For Jerry, his creative spirit ignites when venturing behind arched and weathered walls, embarking on an hour-long journey by car, then transitioning to camel or donkey to reach remote villages inaccessible where cars are forbidden. Passing through tiny doorways and narrow passageways, we enter what feels like a magical hidden world, greeted by skilled artisans hammering metals and firing ceramic jars with generations of inherited craftsmanship.
These artisans help us transform the items we’ve imagined, carefully bringing Jerry’s freehand sketches to life. With each stroke and shape, we bridge the gap between concept and creation, turning our vision into tangible art. The true magic unfolds silently, a profound connection that transcends words, where our creative energies merge with the rich artisan traditions of Morocco, creating an extraordinary sensory experience triggered by our surroundings.
In a world of many colors, our Black & White home accessories collection is a testament to our connection with Morocco, which we call our happy place. It has been created by meeting and falling in love with the amazing people, country, and culture, especially the artisans who have now become like family. This richness can be seen through our eyes in “Black and White,” a collection that captures the soul of our creative journey.
