About This Piece

icon

This hand-glazed bonbonniere ceramic jar is designed for keeping small valuables and special objects safely stored. Its matte white surface is framed by a sculptural burel collar, inspired by the ruffled collars worn by European nobility in the 16th century. The piece closes with a fitted lid that sits lightly atop the form, blending historical reference with quiet function. Both decorative and purposeful, it brings material texture and softness into everyday storage.

Materials & Craftsmanship

icon

The jar is made from earthenware and glazed by hand using a traditional manual dipping technique. The collar is formed from Portuguese burel, a dense wool felt traditionally used in outerwear. It is folded and stitched by hand and may be dry cleaned if needed. The lid is ceramic and fits neatly within the top opening. Small differences in surface or stitching reflect the handmade nature of each piece.

Artisan Heritage

icon

This piece is made in the Oeste region, a historic ceramics area in Portugal. The form is shaped and finished by ceramicists using long-standing regional techniques, while the collar is created by a textile specialist. The design draws from garments that once evolved from simple utility to signs of refinement and tradition. Here, that heritage is translated into a container that celebrates surface, material, and care.

At JJUIN, we work directly with artisans, mentoring them through refining their techniques and designs for the Western market. Beyond artistry, we empower our artisans with essential business tools, helping them navigate deadlines, negotiations, and customer expectations. This partnership supports the preservation of living traditions and ensures each piece is made with care, purpose, and lasting value.

Design & Placement Ideas

This piece is intended for indoor use and can be styled on consoles, desks, or shelving. Use it as a sculptural storage container to hold jewelry, keepsakes, or wrapped sweets. The matte white ceramic contrasts beautifully with the soft texture of the wool collar and works well in clean, tonal interiors.

Notes for Design Professionals: A refined accent piece with functional potential. The collar introduces texture and depth, while the closed form offers visual simplicity. Its scale and finish make it easy to style in display cabinets, nightstands, or gallery surfaces that combine tactile materials and minimal color.
