Golden Oriole with Oxidized Brass Branch

This golden ceramic oriole is inspired by the golden bird often seen perched in Portuguese fig trees. In this version, the bird is shown standing on a hand-cast brass branch, capturing the moment it pauses above the ground in quiet observation. The body is painted in bold yellow and black, echoing the bird’s natural colors while interpreting them with a sculptural lens. The oxidized brass legs and branch base lift the form slightly off the surface and give it a more sculptural presence.

The golden oriole is formed from earthenware, glazed using a manual dipping method and then painted by hand. Each brushstroke is applied in layers to build contrast and texture. The legs and branch are cast in oxidized brass using sand molds. The finish is left untreated to preserve the material’s natural tone. Subtle differences in color and surface reflect the individuality of each handmade piece.

This piece is made in the Oeste region, a coastal region in Portugal known for its ceramics legacy. Local artisans continue to work with clay and metal using time-honored processes that value observation, repetition, and skilled handwork.
